How can I use the dormitory's Wi-Fi network,

In the building K0-1-2-3 and 4 you can use the "kollegium" Wi-Fi network.
Please note, that there is no Wi-Fi service in other dormitories (S and T building, and Famulus).

Required setting: security protocol WPA2 Enterprise.
Settings:

  • EAP method: PEAP
  • Phase 2 authentication: MSCHAPv2
  • CA certificate: do not validate
  • Anonymous identity: leave it blank

For iPhone, the private MAC address must be turned off under advanced settings. Under iOS 14, the setting name is displayed after selecting a private address and wifi network. For devices running Android, you must also select the Use device MAC address option in the advanced settings for data protection.

On Windows systems you can set the desired parameters automatically by running a setup tool wich can be found in the downloads section in this site (Wi-Fi profil - kollegium). The script requires administrator privileges.

The username and password required for wifi login can be found in the profile menu of the website after login.

The user and password creation for the network is an automated process it takes approximately 10 minutes after the first login to this site. You can find and change the credentials under the profile menu of this site.

If your Wi-Fi user is not created within 10 minutes, please let us know about it in the error reporting area.

I have a new device (or just changed between Wi-Fi and cable) and it's not working...

Every device, and the various internet adapters have their unique MAC address. This means, if you have a new computer, or if you used cable before but now you want to use the Wi-Fi, you have to find the apropriate MAC address belongs to that adapter, and modify your registration in this site.

You can find the adapters MAC addresses with the help of this article.

After any modification in the registration you have to wait 10 minutes, then you must restart your computer in order to get it working.

Sometimes on Windows systems the IP address is cached.
If restarting the computer doesn't work:

  1. click start menu,
  2. search for "cmd" and open it,
  3. A black command promt appears. Enter the following: ipconfig /release
  4. press ENTER,
  5. Enter the following: ipconfig /renew
  6. press ENTER,
  7. then you can close the promt.

This will forget your IP address and request a new one.

The website header says I got a blocked IP address, what is the reason?

A blocked IP address does not necessarily mean that the system has been blocked for some violation. By default, a disabled IP address indicates an IP address from which only the university network can be accessed, not the Internet. Your machine may have a disabled IP address for the following reasons:

  • You have not registered your machine or you have entered an incorrect MAC address. Solution: Register your machine in the registered devices menu or correct the registered MAC address.
  • Your room number is incorrect. Solution: Fix it on the profile page, wait 10 minutes and restart your machine.
  • You have not paid your network usage fee, or your first free standard address has not yet been activated. Solution: Check the IP address status in the Registered Devices menu. If it is paid or free and the validity is displayed, wait 10 minutes and restart your machine. If required, pay the appropriate item through check/cheque (which can be obtained from the Dormitory administrator). If the first standard toll-free address does not turn on within 10 minutes (the status does not change on the site), it is possible that one of your data is incorrect in one of the administrative systems (dormitory, Neptune), inquire about it in the error reporting interface.
  • You have committed a violation, so your system or one of our agents has blocked your IP address to protect your network. Solution: You will always receive an e-mail notification about the actual block, and you can also see which IP address is blocked on registered devices. Follow the instructions that came with the block to resolve the issue.
  • The IP address is active, you have paid, and you have a good MAC address registered, but you can't go online. Solution: Are you sure you have a good MAC address? The MAC address of the Wi-Fi and cable internet controller is different. If you are using Wi-Fi, unplug the cable, if you have a cable, turn off the Wi-Fi, double-check the MAC address and correct the registration.

So by default, all new devices connected to the network get a "disabled" IP address, which is completely normal. If the above as well as "Network is not working, what should I do?" If the content of the article has been exhausted, it must be indicated on the error reporting interface by providing the data requested there.

I had a problem while I was try to login or register to this site...

You can use the eduID centralized directory identifier in many sites on the University. This system is not managed by us! It belongs to the University (ESZK).
You can report the issue via the link below:

Can I use my own hotspot or WiFi router?

We do not recommend the use of TP-Link routers with the factory default software, because they tend to overload the network, which lead to the blocking of the room's wall socket without any warning.
If you would like to use any TP-Link router, you have to change it's firmware to OpenWrt or DD-WRT.
Before you change your devices firmware, you should be aware of the following:

  • Product support of OpenWrt or DD-WRT firmwares (you can check it on the links before).
  • The replacement of the firmware is risky, in case of a failure the device may become unusable and may result in loss of warranty (NetClub assumes no liability for any of the cases above).

Hegedűs Gyula dormitory and Multifunkciós building:

The use of a router is only possible with the Wi-Fi radio turned off! We need this to avoid interference and channel overcrowding. Every other setting is equal to the others below. If you would like to use WiFi please check the following article: How can I use the dormitory's Wi-Fi network, "kollegium"?.

Külső (external) and Famulus dormitory:

If you have the proper firmware for your device (according to the first block of this article) you must setup you device as it is written below:

  • You must NOT use the WAN port to connect any device (or the wall socket). These devices need to be used in the same way as switches, so you have to connect the wall socket to one of the LAN portsBy connecting the wall socket to the WAN port, the router not only block your computer from accessing the dormitory network, but also NAT, which will result a banned IP address.
  • Set a password that is complex enough.
  • You must set the router to DHCP client or activate the AP mode (the option names can be different)
  • You have to set a strong password for the WiFi and the SSID have to be the the room number (pl.: Sxxx/A, Txxx/B).
  • Before you connect the device to the dormitory network, you must have to disable the DHCP server on it, and if there is an option for it, you should also disable the NAT.
Attention! Some devices has already support IPv6. If your device does this too, you should disable the IPv6 DHCP server and address asigment. DD-WRT and OpenWrt firmwares has this option, but it can show up in any factory firmware.

Incorrect settings will automatically disable the room's wall socket without warning. With this in mind, we recommend that you use a switch to divide the connection. This devices should not have any problems and can be purchased in stores for an even cheaper price (2-3000 HUF).

Important note: We only provide the network to the endpoint (wall socket). So if you can't set up your router, either don't use such a device or look for someone who can do it for you. NetClub is not responsible for maintaining / configuring students private devices.

What is NAT? Can I use it?

Network Address Translation is a way of sharing your internet connection to other devices. In the dormitory, any kind of sharing (hotspot, for example) is strictly forbidden and leads to the immediate ban of the source IP address for at least 1,5 hour.
If you would use new devices, you should register them under registered devices and IP addresses.

If your IP address is got banned, and you stopped the sharing or whatever caused the NAT, you should let us know about it in the error reporting area. The unblocking of the addresses is a manual process.

How can I find my device's MAC address?

Windows 2000/XP/7:
Start menu, Run: cmd.exe type in getmac -v
Here you need to look at the columns Physical Address. There may be more than one line. If you are connected to a network via UTP cable you should choose one under Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection (or something similar), or if you use Wi-Fi, then the one following Wireless LAN adapter Wireless Network Connection.

Windows 8/10:
This process is similar to the previous version of Windows, but the command line can be started on the desktop by right-clicking the Start menu icon.

Linux distribution:
Terminal: ifconfig
Here, lines with HWaddr contains the relevant data.

OS X:
Terminal: networksetup -listallhardwareports
The MAC address is displayed in the line starting with Ethernet Address.

What programs should not be used?

If you use your computer mainly for internet browsing, we recommend installing a free Linux distribution (eg. Debian, UHU, Ubuntu). You can try Ubuntu without installing by booting your computer from the network (PXE boot).

  • delete AMD Quick Stream software, if it is installed
  • do not share your internet connection in any way (eg. hotspot)

We do not recommend (excerpt):

Operating systems

  • Windows Vista, Windows XP and earlier Windows releases. Suggestion: Windows 7 SP2, Windows 8.1 or Windows 10
  • Chrome OS. It's using NAT by default and NAT will result a ban of the source IP address.

There is only one endpoint in the room, how can more people use it?

You should buy a switch, it will provide you multiple endpoints.

Központi and Multi dormitories rooms have two endpoints, however due to technical reasons, only one of them is usable. Currently, this is the ODD numbered socket.

I moved to a new room, and the internet is not working

First, you have to modify your room number in your profile menu. Please see the "format of the room numbers" section there.
If you also changed the way that you computer connects to the network, please read this article: I have a new device (or just changed between Wi-Fi and cable) and it's not working....

After any modification in the registration you have to wait 10 minutes, then you must restart your computer in order to get it working.

How traffic measurement works?

The traffic of each IP address is measured individually with a 168 hour base in a "sliding window". It means that your IP address traffic counter (under the registered devices tab) shows the last 168 hour, counted back from the current time.

Because of this, there is no "point of reset" of your traffic (as you would expect based on the mobile phone cellular data plan working structure). Your traffic would be zero only if you have no traffic az all for 168 hour.

Only the traffic that leaves the University's network are included in the measurement (eg. public internet sites, google, facebook etc.). The intranet traffic is not counted in it. The direction and the value of the traffic limit can be found in the data plan's description.

Exceeding the limit will result a ban of 168 hour, starting at the time of the event.

Windows 10 / 11 error connecting (TLS)

The problem is caused by a Windows bug, which originates from a recent update.

If you copy the following text into a notepad and save it as fix.reg file name and run it, it should work after a restart:

- On Windows 10 :

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RasMan\PPP\EAP\13]
"TlsVersion"=dword:000000c0

- On Windows 11 :

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RasMan\PPP\EAP\13]
"TlsVersion"=dword:00000fc0

Free address activation conditions

For free internet use, we consider two conditions (+the first eduid login on our site so the account is created):

- Active student status.

- Moved-in status in the dormitory administration system.

For those users who do not have an active student status (graduated / do not yet or not anymore have Neptune access), can pay the internet usage fee with the check on the main reception.

* We provide internet access for employees/instructors with manual activation.
